Out of the Past: Jazz & Noir
Jazz vocalist Lauren White brings to life tunes featured in some of the most popular movies of the Film Noir era. With hip, contemporary arrangements, the CD is a sexy, fun, swinging, edgy project that will appeal to Film Noir buffs and to anyone who enjoys great songs sung with style and authority.
White is backed by an all-star band of top L.A.-based musicians. With arrangements by Kathryn Bostic and produced by Mark Winkler, Out of the Past: Jazz & Noir is a superb undertaking that highlights the talents of a singer who has been flying under the radar for far too long.
“On her exquisite and imaginative third album, versatile jazz stylist Lauren White brings the past into a fresh, hip and delightful present, fashioning colorful new twists on inspiring and dynamic but often obscure tunes from classic film noirs, including “He’s Funny That Way” from The Postman Always Rings Twice and “I’d Rather Have the Blues” from Kiss Me Deadly. Finding emotional sweet spots amid the lush and vibrant production of Mark Winkler, the embracing arrangements of Kathryn Bostic, and some top sidemen, White alternates beautifully between moments of deep, haunting intimacy and lively sass, wit and swing.” –Jonathan Widran
“White stamps the vocals as her own while remaining true to the spirit of the tunes and the flicks they came from. A delightful out of the ordinary date that finds the sweet spot for the time and place that really only exists in the back of your mind.”
Lauren White is an accomplished Los Angeles-based jazz singer with a beautiful and versatile voice. Her first three CDs, Lauren White, Experiment, and Meant to Be, were well received and have enjoyed airplay on L.A.’s local jazz station KJAZZ as well as throughout the country. She performs twice yearly at the Metropolitan Room in New York City and can be heard in many jazz venues in the Los Angeles area, including Catalina Bar & Grill, Vitello’s, and the Cinegrill. Her newest CD, Out of the Past: Jazz & Noir, will be released in May, 2016. With updated jazz arrangements, the project brings to life songs featured in some of the most popular movies of the Film Noir genre.
